2''Addressing Sexist Stereotypes'' The United Reformed Church and Vines Centre Trust working with CEC INTERIM REPORT March 2005

The remit of our research project is set out in the Project Brief and Working Agreement.

At this stage in the research, the following areas have been covered:

  1. An overview of statistics for employment of women and men in different sectors of employment in the UK as a whole in order to identify those areas where women are in the minority. A presentation of those statistics as part of the first part of the report (see attached).

  2. Contact with those agencies concerned to encourage Equal Opportunities in Employment in order to:

    i) identify those who are helping to improve the situation for women ii) understand the inequalities in opportunities for education in a range of subjects iii) understand the limitations in careers guidance for a range of employment areas iv) understand the imbalance in higher education and on-going training for women and men in their chosen field of employment v) understand the situation regarding equal pay for women and men vi) understand the situation regarding career development for women and men vii) understand the possibilities for flexible working arrangements for women and men in their chosen field of employment
    e.g. Agencies contacted include:

The Law Society The Equal Opportunities Commission Women in Science and Engineering Department of Trade and Industry The Fawcett Society The Oxford Womens Training Scheme Women in Plumbing

  3. Contact is being made with 30 women for the purpose of face-to-face interviews:
    • these will be carried out over the next two months and will include women in the following areas of employment:

    • the law, engineering, higher education, politics, international banking, plumbing, construction industry, taxi-drivers, the air-line industry

The results of the work to date will form the first part of the report as set out in the work agreement, though the statistics gathered will exceed the 1000 women mentioned as it is not possible to carry out a unique study for this number. The statistics used have been gathered from other agencies.

The next stage of the research – to be carried out over the next few months is:

  1. To complete the interviews, analyse the results and present the findings

  2. To chose two areas of work for a more detailed study:
    • an area where there is no, or little discrimination and from which good practice can be gathered (this will probably be THE LAW where considerable change can be identified
    • an area in which a number of barriers persist to the progression of women (yet to be identified).

This study, carried out, mainly during June and July, will seek to identify good practice in challenging stereotypes and addressing barriers to women; and identifying where the barriers remain.

  3. To set up and complete the study of the experiences of school girls identifying factors which form preconceptions, stereotypes at a younger age.
This study will be carried out in a school in Maidstone, Kent which the Vines Centre Trust has had contact with in the past. It will be carried out in June/July, or in September as the group to be studied will be involved in examinations.

  4. There will be an attempt to determine the actions which must be undertaken to effect change which will minimise the levels of discrimination against women in the sectors studied.

  5. A written report of the whole will be presented with recommendations.
