EUROPEAN
RESEARCH PROJECT – Draft
of report to date – 31.3.05
Introduction
The overall aim of this project is to promote change in gender roles
and to overcome gender stereotypes in the area of employment.
This study forms part of a project in partnership with Belgian and Italian
researchers.
The particular area of this study is in three parts.
- Firstly
there is an initial study providing an overview of the statistics of
women in employment in work/industries which have, until recently, been
traditionally predominantly male.
- Secondly there are the results of questionnaires and interviews with
thirty women working or training in such areas.
- Thirdly, there is a choice of two employment areas,
for further study, which emerge from the interviews and which can be
identified as having adopted policies that have encouraged the breakdown
of gender stereotypes, or which seem to have particular difficulties
in doing so.
- A fourth, subsidiary area of study is that of some
work with female school leavers to identify their attitudes to the
world of work in the light of this study.
The conclusion of the report includes recommendations for continued
change.
